REVIEW: The World of Tim Burton

By Emily Breakell

The World of Tim Burton exhibition ,at the Design Museum, is a quirky, gothic journey into the mind of one of the most imaginative artists of the past 50 years. It features over 500 sketches, paintings, films, photos, and sculptures, focusing on Burton’s illustrations and design process that inspired his most famous works.

The exhibition focuses on Burton’s creative development, from early school sketches to his Hollywood films, with an emphasis on the intricate process behind his illustrations and how they became the basis for his sculptures, fashion, and stop-motion creations.

The exhibition features iconic pieces like ‘Edward Scissorhands’' hands, showcasing Burton's signature blend of creepy, dark designs that merge eerie beauty with childlike wonder. A highlight is the intricate work of costume designer Colleen Atwood, with designs like the Catwoman suit from ‘Batman Returns’ and the whimsical outfits from ‘Alice in Wonderland’, which are even more spectacular in person. The exhibition also includes amazing sculptures, especially from ‘Corpse Bride', where sinister models bring Burton’s characters to life in three dimensions, adding more depth to his peculiar and imaginative world.

The World of Tim Burton invites visitors to step into Burton’s psyche, where eccentric characters and distorted realities reflect a playful escape from the ordinary.

While it may not be the most groundbreaking exhibition, it’s still worth experiencing for the wonder and discovery it offers. It sparks curiosity and leaves you wanting to watch all of Burton’s films, eager to revisit his curious characters and twisted stories. Whether you’re a child, an adult, or anyone in between, the exhibition offers something for everyone, combining fun and creativity in an immersive way.
